To the Editor:

Re “The Prison Sentence That Saved My Friend’s Life,” by Nicholas Kristof (column, Feb. 9):

My dad struggled with addiction during my childhood. When I was 15, I called the cops on him when he was high and erratic. They came, told my dad to calm down and left. The door shut; I felt empty — nothing had been solved. I had nowhere to turn. I never wanted to call the cops, but I was desperate.

That night showed me what our crisis response system lacks: behavioral health workers equipped to respond in moments like these, and reliable connections to long-term help. When Mr. Kristof’s friend Drew sought prison for treatment, he was desperate for help. Jail just happened to be the option in front of him.

This illustrates just how out of reach addiction treatment is, with long wait lists, high costs,66jogo casino poor conditions and not enough providers.

A sale to Qualcomm would present huge hurdles:

In jails and prisons, drugs are still available, effective treatment is rare, and overdoses occur. People can also cycle in and out of jail, ending up back on the street without meaningful care or support. Incarceration isn’t a solution when it also harms and kills people. If we agree that those struggling with addiction need help, then our focus must be on making treatment accessible — quickly and on demand.

To the Editor:

Nicholas Kristof’s column starts with a faulty and harmful premise, yet acknowledges what’s still urgently needed — accessible, evidence-based drug treatment on demand.
