The demonstrations, organized by several pro-Palestinian groups including Within Our Lifetime and Jewish Voice for Peace, were peaceful and largely orderly for most of the day but escalated after one group of protesters made its way uptown from Grand Central Terminal.

Re “Trump Proposing Takeover of Gaza as U.S. Territory” (front page, Feb. 5):

What an atrocious and sleazy idea. Gaza is not West Palm Beach.

President Trump disregards, or is ignorant of, a fundamental issue of the protracted century-long conflict: Palestinian civilians love and long for their land. The solution to their displacement is not more displacement.

Furthermore, despite all the devastation, Hamas is still a terrorist force in the territory and has already rejected Mr. Trump’s proposal.

It is doubtful that Mr. Trump’s core voters, mainly concerned with “America First” and avoiding foreign entanglements,66jogo support taking over Gaza. I imagine that most American Jews do not support it. This proposal will be Trump’s Folly and a disaster for Israelis and Palestinians, if it is pursued.

To the Editor:

President Trump’s proposal to take over Gaza, displace two million Palestinians and turn it into a tourism haven — “the Riviera of the Middle East” — under U.S. control is not only reckless but unthinkable as well.

A two-state solution, which allows both Israelis and Palestinians to coexist peacefully in their respective territories, would be far more constructive for the region’s stability. To suggest that Palestinians should simply abandon their homes and move to Egypt or Jordan is an oversimplified and dangerous proposal.

It’s easy to champion such big ideas when you speak next to the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has built his career opposing the creation of a Palestinian state, but this callous disregard for the lives and dignity of the people of Gaza is appalling. The United States should support peace and building bridges, not imperialism through annexation.
